People struggled with my last name when I was single, refusing to attempt a pronunciation or apologizing before they even started. My married surname is no easier for them. One man even asked why I couldn’t marry someone named Jones or Smith. I think he was joking, but it stung. This was my ethnicity he was mocking.

At the joint meeting of the Main Board of the Supreme Council and the Audit Committee of the Union of Poles in Germany (ZPwN, Związek Polaków w Niemczech) on August 24, 2004 in Göttingen, six demands were made against the German government. Particularly painful topics — such as the demand for the return of plundered union property owned by the Federal Republic as a successor to the Third Reich, or the recognition of the status of a national minority lost in 1940 — were expressed very clearly and convincingly here. Unfortunately, to this day, the Union has not received any response to these demands.

For many years, Polish governments were not interested in properly nurturing the Polish history. Even now, the history taught in schools contains many understatements and fake "facts". Therefore, the historical awareness of many Poles today is limited to the symbolic commemoration of monuments and memorial sites, while the rest of the world has no idea what the terrible fate of the Polish nation was during the Second World War, and the crimes committed against the Poles remain in the shadow of the Holocaust.

At a time when the borders between the states had not yet been firmly established, the inhabitants moved freely across the territories of both communities. In later periods, the waves of emigration were caused by economic and political reasons. About 8 million people have moved to Germany from Poland in the last 200 years.

The condition of the American Polish diaspora as the largest group of the Polish diaspora should be evaluated by an objective examination of a scientific institution. This analysis should include the current state of affairs and the condition of the Polish diaspora in the United States, as well as an attempt to set the course of action in order to prevent the progressive assimilation of the Polish diaspora in the USA. A report on this should be drawn up by experts from both sides of the political spectrum. This article is an attempt to open a solid debate on the American Polish diaspora as the largest group of the Polish diaspora.

There is a shortage of people who could contribute to creating a new policy for the Polish diaspora in the United States.
