Can "Brandmauer" save Germany from the Alternative for Germany?

The European right-wing parties, to which the German AfD belongs, can be described using the words of neo-communist Eurocrats, spoken at the congress of the European People's Party by Ursula von der Leyen on March 8, 2024 in Bucharest, as follows:

The names (of these parties - author's note) may differ, but they have a common goal: they want to trample on our values and destroy our Europe!

If it is destroying Europe, then it is necessary to destroy the party, and this is what the European collective farm has been nurturing for the past year or so: red embryos, under the warm feathers of the Berlin hen.

Already in January 2024, a German politician, CDU MP Marco Wanderwitz, filed a motion to ban the AfD, accusing it of: anti-Semitic, racist, anti-minority, revisionist slogans, conspiracy theories, as well as hate speech, discrimination against sexual minorities and aggression - in other words, everything that every healthy movement in leftist Europe that does not agree to brainwashing is accused of. The party was not banned.

However, in order to achieve the goal of its destruction, a new term was invented, the purpose of which was to prevent the spread throughout Western Europe (apart from – most recently – Poland), and from January 2025 also in the USA, of the new trend called “normalcy,” that characterizes the program of the American president. This invented term is the word “Brandmauer” – a firewall.

This is a political metaphor that was used by the President of the European Commission during the European Parliament elections on 6-9 June 2024, when right-wing groups achieved huge success. Ursula von der Leyen, summing up the threat to "our Europe", because "right-wing populists are gaining support and power in almost all countries", mentioned the use of "Brandmauer" against them. This term was also recently referred to by the German head of the Christian Democrats, Friedrich Merz, after the parliamentary elections in February this year.

What is this threat to the Western world that needs to be “firewalled”? What are the goals, character and program of this party: the AfD?

Alternative für Deutschland (AfD, Alternative for Germany) was founded in 2013 and is considered an “opposition party.” It has been in the Bundestag since 2017 and is now represented in 15 of the 16 state parliaments. In the elections of 23 February 2025, the party doubled its result compared to the 2021 elections, reaching 20.8 percent. It came in second place.

The AfD is seeking to create a different Germany, in which the federal government is to be dismissed after the elections. Some members of this party want to reorganize the constitutional state and a different division of power.

In order to faithfully present this point of the AfD party programme, I will use the words of its member, Tomasz Frohlich, spoken on 22 January during the opening of the Polish Presidency of the European Parliament:

We want a different Germany! A Germany where we accept our own gender instead of questioning it in favor of 67 fictional genders, a Germany where our children enjoy a proper education instead of being subjected to rainbow terror.

Here is the program of this party - in short:

  • Ban on marriage for gays and lesbians. The party considers such marriages a "red-green ideological project" leading to the "extinction of one's own people". The AfD opposes the genderization of public life and the equal status of "rainbow families".
  • Commitment to the traditional family. It defines "family" as follows: "A traditional family consisting of a father, a mother and, if possible, several children. This is the guiding principle of our family policy." [The party's co-chairwoman, Alice Weidel, is a lesbian, in a stable relationship, raising two children. (according to 2, 3) - editor's note]
  • Supporting the restriction of abortion rights in Germany. He uses the slogan: "More children - instead of mass immigration"
  • Proclaiming the need to end funding for “gender research.”
  • Opposition to the "self-determination" law on gender selection. As an example: the AfD appealed to the German Constitutional Court against the "gender quota" and succeeded. The Constitutional Court of Thuringia declared the resolution passed by the state parliament that women and men must alternate on party candidate lists to be contrary to the constitutional order.
  • The AfD proclaims the preservation of German culture, language and identity, and the German leading culture should replace the "multi-culti" that has dominated since 2015.
  • It proclaims the opposite thesis to that uttered by Angela Merkel in 2018, that "Islam belongs to Germany". The AfD's position is different: "Islam is in conflict with our value system - and does not belong in Germany".
  • It demands an end to foreign funding for mosques, the closure of Koranic schools in Germany and the inclusion of Islamic studies in ethics classes. It also proclaims: no special rights for Muslim students.

In connection with this attitude of the AfD, here are two of my comments:

  • Firstly, it was this party's opposition that resulted in an increase in support among German society throughout the country for opposing the growing influx of masses of Muslim immigrants.
  • Secondly, the reaction of both German churches on this matter cannot be ignored, namely: the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Germany published (in February 2024) a document called "Ethnic nationalism and Christianity are incompatible". It stated, among other things, that "the faithful of the Catholic Church cannot vote for the right-wing AfD party". The Evangelical Church reacted to this party even more drastically. Once, the Evangelicals cried out: "We are all the Church". But those times are gone. Now it is: "Everyone is the Church, except the AfD". Anyone who strays from the leftist path and touches the party is eliminated, and the Evangelical churches carry out political purges in their ranks.

When it comes to the domestic policy of the German state, the AfD programme includes the following issues:

  • Restore compulsory military service and strengthen the Bundeswehr.
  • Not to create a so-called "European Army" - this is a response to Macron's idea from 2018, supported by the Germans in the "German document of 06.10.2020" and by the Spinelli Group established in 2020 in the European Union ("The goal is to establish a stable federal state with European armed forces instead of national armies"). The AfD believes that responsibility for the issue of defense and security lies with the United Nations.
  • NATO membership is in line with Germany's foreign and security policy interests and therefore the European part of the Atlantic Alliance should be strengthened and NATO supported.
  • Don't tighten the gun laws.
  • Guard the borders, reduce bureaucracy in offices.
  • AfD is against gender madness. For the anti-LGBT law passed by Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, the party is ready to award him a "human rights award" and expresses support for his ban on "early sexualization" and "homo-propaganda".
  • AfD criticizes the "madness of EU regulations" related to climate policy and the CAP. It denies human-induced climate change and declares its rejection of the Green Deal strategy and the common agricultural policy. It wants a return to nuclear energy and technological openness.
  • Fights for the sovereignty of nation states.
  • It fights against common threats emanating from the corridors of the European Union.
  • It calls for a "controlled dissolution of the domineering EU" and even wants to follow the UK's example and leave the EU (Dexit). AfD leader Alice Weidel spoke about this directly in an interview with The Financial Times in London.
  • It rejects the new "secular religion" - Wokeness - in line with Donald Trump's program. According to this party's program, it is forbidden to mutilate children and support their gender change by both parents and non-governmental organizations.

The AfD shares many common aspirations and goals with the Polish right, including the fight for nation states and concern for the interests of one's own country, common anti-Islamic accents, opposing the acceptance of refugees, especially from the Arab world, disagreement with forcing nation states to adopt the LGTB ideology, understanding the concept of "family", entrusting the function of raising one's own children to parents and not the state.

It is contrary to the program of Polish parties and Polish raison d'état that the AfD is decidedly pro-Russian, opposes sanctions against Russia and takes a pro-Russian position on the war in Ukraine, promoting (in Germany) the Kremlin's position. This applies above all to the East German ranks of the party. The AfD's attitude towards the war in Ukraine is expressed in the words "This war is not our business" (co-founder Gauland) and "Germany should no longer spend money on foreign wars" (AfD chairman Chrupalla).

It was, among others, the Alternative for Germany that US Vice President JD Vance had in mind when he criticised European-German Brandmauer policy at the Munich Security Conference: “There should be no room for firewalls,” he exclaimed. And he said this to the victorious CDU, which had rejected co-government with the second party elected by the people – the AfD: “You can’t talk about security, about democracy – if you’re afraid of your own voters.”

There was another endorsement of the party from the Americans. Vance met with its leader, Alice Weidel, on the sidelines of the Munich Conference in person (she was asked to leave the Conference), and Elon Musk offered his congratulations immediately after learning the election results. According to more recent information, some of the Confederation's MPs (except Grzegorz Braun) joined the new EP faction created by the AfD in July 2024 under the name Europe of Sovereign Nations.

In conclusion, I will refer to the forecast for the future of the AfD contained in the Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung: "One thing seems certain: If the next federal government fails, the AfD could become even stronger in the next general election." The news about the above "forecasts" of the Swiss daily about the AfD was announced right after the Bundestag elections (February 24, 2025).

In the latest edition of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung from March 13, 2025, author Johannes C. Bockenheimer already provides evidence that the newly elected government may indeed “fail”. He lists the following reasons: the Greens will refuse their support, Merz will have too few votes in parliament (only 41), the president of the Free State of Bavaria, governing with the Free Voters, criticizes Merz for his plans to indebt the state (“electoral fraud”), the SPD base may rebel, there are already murmurs of discontent in the ranks of Merz’s CDU, and on top of that, all of this may finally be overthrown by Europe Direct — the center of the European Commission’s pan-European network.

So the road to AfD “victory” is open – and Brandmauer is for naught!
